The Sibugay Wetland Nature Reserve (Site no. 2552) has been officially recognized as the ninth (9th) Wetland of International Importance (Ramsar Site) in the Philippines!

Kabasalan, Zamboanga Sibugay, part of the Sibugay Wetland Nature Reserve, is one of Oceanus’ key project sites. Oceanus Conservation has partnered with the Kapunungan sa Gagmay’ng Mangingisda sa Concepcion (KGMC), led by local champion Mr. Robert “Ka-Dodoy” Ballon. Since 2022, this collaboration has focused on mangrove restoration, capacity building, and creating sustainable livelihood opportunities for local communities through environmental conservation efforts, specifically on mangroves and their associated wildlife.

The area boasts thriving mangrove forests and hosts a variety and diverse wildlife, including migratory birds like Redshanks, Greenshanks, Plovers, Sandpipers, and Terns, as well as resident species such as Javan Pond Herons, Black-crowned Night Herons, Egrets, Stork-billed Kingfishers, Collared kingfishers, and Brahminy kites. Additionally, people have spotted the Philippine Duck in the area.

This rich ecosystem not only supports biodiversity but it is crucial for local communities, adjacently providing food and livelihood opportunities. By protecting and restoring these wetlands, we ensure the sustainability of resources that thousands depend on for their survival. Together, let’s continue to champion the balance between conservation and the well-being of local communities.

What is a Ramsar List?

The Ramsar List or the List of Wetlands of International Importance consists of globally significant wetlands that are identified based on their ecological, biological, and conservation value.

These sites are assessed through nine criteria that includes representing rare or unique wetland types and supporting biodiversity, including vulnerable species, critical life stages, and significant populations of waterbirds, fish, and other wildlife taxa. This emphasizes the roles of wetlands in maintaining global biodiversity and sustaining ecosystems and the importance of protecting these critical landscapes.
